The word “Apo” is a title of deep respect, meaning “revered elder” in many of the Lumad languages of Mindanao. It comes from Apo Sandawa, a name that translates to “Elder” or “Grandfather Sandawa” the spirit believed to dwell within the mountain itself.
To the Manobo and Kalagan peoples, Apo Sandawa is more than a guardian spirit; he is an ancestor, a living presence that connects them to their origins. The tribes who live around the mountain’s foothills. The Obo, Bagobo, Tagabawa, Matigsalug, Ata, Arumanen, Tinananen, Kulamanen, Tagakaulo, and Kagan all share in this reverence.
The mountain is sacred ground, where the diwata, the supreme walyan or shaman, performs ancient rituals to honor Apo Sandawa and commune with the spirits of their ancestors. Through these ceremonies, the people renew their bond with the mountain and the life it represents.
